- American Arctic explorer and Naval officer -
( 1856 - 1920 )
* List of the stories
he appears in :
- D 93288 : "The Empire-Builder from Calisota" (Lo$#11), from 1994, by Don Rosa. |
* His biography :
Robert Edwin Peary
was born in Cresson, Pennsylvania, on May 6, 1856 and grew up in Maine.
He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1877. He was appointed a Civil Engineer,
United
States Navy, in 1881 and progressed through the ranks to Rear Admiral,
in 1911.
Peary led many expeditions in Nicaragua,
Greenland,
and Arctic, often accompagnied by his wife, Josephine Diebitsch
Peary. In 1909, him, Matthew A. Henson, and
four Eskimos were the first people to reach the North Pole
(although
Frederick A. Cook later claimed to have reached the North Pole before him,
in April 1908, which was a lie). He wrote many articles and books about
the Polar regions.
He died in Washington, DC, on February
20, 1920.
He was awarded a Congressional medal in 1944 for
his polar expedition.
* His place in the Barks/Rosa stories universe
:
In, "The Empire-Builder from Calisota",
Scrooge mets Peary in the Polar region, in 1909, shortly before
he reached North Pole, and tells him he wants to finance his North Pole
expedition because he wants to buy it so that people will pay to use a
compass and send letters to Santa Claus. Peary disagrees and tells him
to beat it. Then, leaving Peary, Scrooge receives a telegram from the Tsar
of Russia, telling that the Tsar accept the audience he asked for a long
time ago, and quickly runs to Russia, passing by North Pole just before
Peary reached it. So, the real first reacher of North Pole wouldn't be
Peary, neither Cook, but a McDuck :-)
In this story also appears an unnamed man who tells Peary he just hired
new carriers. The man must be Matthew
A. Henson, and the carriers must be the four Eskimos.
