* His biography :
Born near Cartagena in 1833,
Amador
Guerrero had come to Panama in the late 1840's as a doctor,
where his practice flourished. A Conservative, he had been designated
to become president of the department of Panama in 1867, but a revolution
prevented him from taking office. The Liberals captured and sent him to
exile for a year. When he returned, he gave up his political ambitions
to serve as superintendent of the Santo Tomas Hospital. His most
important post, however, was as chief physician of the Panama Railroad.
As the emissary (1903) for the revolutionaries to the United States,
he helped obtain U.S. aid for the successful revolution. He was unanimously
selected president of the new republic by the constitutional convention
despite a stipulation in the constitution that the president be born in
Panama. This was a very important position given the importance of the railroad
in Panama, and gave him lots of notoriety. When Ferdinand de Lesseps visited
the Isthmus, he was one of the Panamanians that welcomed him. When the
representative of the railroad in the US, William Nelson Cromwell, needed
people in Panama, he was an obvious choice.
In September 1903, the frail looking
doctor traveled to New York to obtain the support of Cromwell and Roosevelt
for the independence of Panama. He led the revolutionary movement
of November, 1903 using plenty of Wall Street money. He became the first
president of Panama.
* His place in the Barks/Rosa stories universe
:

by name when General Esteban tells Roosevelt
